Student Accommodation in Derby

Key Living Expenses in Derby

• Accommodation: Rent is usually the biggest monthly cost. And it can be varied by room types. A private room in a shared house or flat is often around £450 to £850 per month, while premium city-centre apartments can reach £1,300+ per month. If your main goal is to save money, shared houses are normally worth checking before studios. On uhomes.com, student accommodation in Derby UK starts from £83/week.
• Utilities & Internet: Bills can change the real cost quite a bit. If utilities and internet are not included, you may need another £130 to £180 per month for gas, electricity, water, heating and broadband. It matters more in winter when heating can push costs up.
• Groceries: Food costs are easier to control if you cook most days. A weekly grocery shop for one student is often around £30 to £45, depending on how often they cook at home. Eating out is where the budget can slip. A casual meal in Derby may cost around £15 to £25. Coffee and snacks between classes can also quietly add more than expected.
• Transport: Local transport in Derby may cost around £70 to £100 per month. The transportation costs depends heavily on where your accommodation is. Taxis are convenient late at night but can quickly become expensive if used regularly.

Entertainment, laundry, phone plans, study materials and small daily purchases can add another £100 to £300 per month. The first few weeks after moving in can also cost more that usual. You may need bedding, kitchen items, cleaning products, or small things for your room. So, remember to leave some space in the budget instead of planning every pound too tightly.

University of Derby

The University of Derby is the main university in the city, with around 34,000 students across different levels of study and more than 300 undergraduate programmes. Its largest Derby site is Kedleston Road in Allestree, with other teaching spaces linked to Markeaton Street, Britannia Mill and the city centre.

The university also fits Derby’s wider working-city background. Derby has long links with engineering, rail and manufacturing, and the University of Derby presents itself as a modern, industry-connected university. That does not mean every student studies engineering, of course. But it does help explain why Derby feels more practical than showy as a student city.

This city layout is worth noticing before choosing where to live. Derby is not a city where every student needs to stay next to one campus gate. Student accommodation near the University of Derby is spread across central streets, managed student buildings, shared houses and quieter residential areas. Studios and en-suites may suit students who want more privacy. Shared houses and larger flats usually make more sense for students trying to keep rent lower.

Derby College

Derby College is not a university, but it is still a big part of the city’s education map. It serves school leavers, apprentices, vocational students, adult learners and some higher education students across different sites. That means Derby College students may need to think about location in a slightly different way from university students.

The Joseph Wright Centre sits in Derby city centre and is known for A-Level and advanced study. The Roundhouse is based around Pride Park and is more closely connected with technical and vocational learning. For students, this makes travel planning quite practical: a city-centre flat may work better for one course, while a house with good bus or train access may be better for another.

This is why choosing Derby College housing should not be judged by distance alone. Rent, course location, bus routes, room type and daily routine all matter. If you study in Derby, it is worth comparing Derby city centre student accommodation and quieter residential options before deciding which setup fits your week.
