Louisiana State University offers a variety of transportation options for students. At school, the primary mode of daily transportation for students is the free Tiger Trails bus system. As the official transit service provided by LSU, it covers major residence halls, academic buildings, libraries, and numerous LSU student apartments located on the south side of campus. During the academic semester, most routes begin operating around 7:00 AM and continue until late in the evening, ensuring that students can safely return to their residences even in late night.

Tiger Trails Bus: The Most Popular Transportation Option

• Coverage Area: Includes internal campus loop routes as well as radial routes connecting the campus to apartment complexes on the south side (such as those in the Tigerland area and along Ben Hur Road). Popular routes, such as Tigerland A and Tigerland B, provide direct service to student housing both on- and off-campus including LSU student housing like Arlington Cottages & Townhomes, Lark Baton Rouge, and The Oliver.
• Night Service: Several "Night Routes" are available; on weekdays, some operate until midnight, while from Thursday through Saturday, an extended "Night Express Shuttle" runs until 3:00 AM, covering areas such as Tigerland and Greek Row to ensure safe travel during late hours. Students can download the LSU Mobile App or the TransLōc App to view real-time bus locations, estimated arrival times, and route maps.
• Many LSU students report that once they get accustomed to using Tiger Trails, they rarely need to drive to classes or for shopping, thereby significantly reducing transportation costs and alleviating parking-related stress.

Other Options for Short-Distance Travel
In addition to the bus system, walking and micro-mobility options are also quite common:

Walking

The LSU campus itself is very pedestrian-friendly; the distance between most academic buildings and residence halls is moderate, allowing students to reach their destinations within 10 to 20 minutes of walking on pleasant days.

Bicycles and Electric Scooters

The university provides bicycle parking facilities and hosts the Gotcha e-bike sharing system, through which students can rent electric-assist bicycles at discounted rates via a mobile app. Electric scooters (such as Spin) are also widely used across campus for quick transit, though users are required to adhere to designated parking regulations.

Driving

LSU provides a limited number of EV charging stations on campus. However, generally speaking, most LSU students tend to favor public transportation and micromobility optionsCrather than relying on private vehicles to save on fuel, parking, and maintenance costs.

Transportation Tips When Choosing Housing

If you are looking for an apartment near LSU, prioritize communities located within walking distance or a short commute of a Tiger Trails bus stop, particularly apartments situated along Ben Hur Road on the south side of campus (such as The Legacy at Baton Rouge, Redpoint Baton Rouge, etc.). These locations typically offer the following advantages:

1. Direct access to Tiger Trails routes, making commuting to and from campus extremely convenient (without the need to drive).
2. Proximity to shopping, dining, and daily amenities, resulting in a lower overall cost of living.
3. Reduced reliance on a private vehicle, helping you save hundreds of dollars each month on gas and parking fees.

Students living in these areas indicate that getting to morning classes, returning to their dorms in the evening, or heading out to Tigerland or shopping centers on weekends can all be easily managed via public transit or walking.
