Matraville is named in honor of James Matra (1746–1806), an American sailor and diplomat. Matra was a midshipman on Captain James Cook's voyage to Botany Bay in 1770. He later proposed to the British government that a colony be established at Botany Bay for dispossessed American Loyalists after the American War of Independence. Although he was not given the governorship of the colony, his contributions to the area's early history are commemorated in the suburb's name.
