Safest and Most Dangerous Suburbs in Brisbane: You Need to be Careful

If you’re considering moving to Brisbane to live or study, you’ll first want to choose where to live. But worried about which suburbs to avoid? When choosing where to live, safety and peace of mind must be at the forefront of your mind. While there are many great places to live in Brisbane, the capital of Queensland, some suburbs seem out of place due to high crime rates. In this article, we’ll look at the 10 safest suburbs in Brisbane and the 10 most dangerous suburbs in Brisbane.

Is Brisbane Safe?

Brisbane is generally well-policed as a relatively safe city, but some safety hazards exist. Brisbane, one of Australia’s major cities, has maintained a good law and order situation. The government attaches great importance to law and order and has taken several measures to maintain social stability and public safety. In the streets and lanes of Brisbane, you can see the police patrolling to provide security for citizens and international students. Brisbane has a relatively low crime rate and a good law and order situation compared to other cities in Australia. Although the overall law and order situation is good, Brisbane also has some law and order problems. For example, burglaries and robberies occur from time to time. In addition, the crime rate in Queensland has also increased, leading to some security concerns.

1. QLD 4006

The most dangerous suburb in Brisbane, QLD 4006, includes Bowen Hills, Newstead, Herston, Mayne, and Fortitude Valley, all located in and around Brisbane CBD.

Crime percentage:
drug offences: 32%
Burglary: 41%

Fortitude Valley, in particular, has seen a large number of drug and brawl incidents every night as more and more bars and nightclubs have opened in the area. What was once a tranquil area now requires heavy police patrols every night to avoid chaos. It’s safe to say that the CBD is the most dangerous suburb in Brisbane.

2. QLD 4101

Second on the list is QLD 4101, which includes Highgate Hill, South Brisbane, South Bank, West End, and Mater Hill and is adjacent to the CBD. 3,951 crimes have been committed in the last 12 months, an average of 11 daily crimes. The conclusion was drawn that the closer you are to the CBD, the higher the crime rate.

Crime percentage:
Burglary 30%
Illegal entry 28%
Assault 12%
Drug dealing accounted for 11%

3. QLD 4122

QLD 4122 includes the areas of Mansfield, Mount Gravatt, Upper Mount Gravatt, and Wishart and is located southwest of the CBD. There were only 3,465 crimes in this area over the last 12 months of last year, an average of nearly 10 per day.

Crime category:
Illegal entry at 31%
Burglary 26%
Traffic accidents 14%
Drug dealing 9%

This area is far from the CBD and has a moderate population density, and the fact that so many crimes have occurred shows that it is indeed very chaotic. The most severe cases were three assaults, all of which resulted in casualties.

4. QLD 4077

QLD 4077 covers the areas of Doolandella, Durack, Inala, and Richlands and is located southwest of Brisbane CBD. In the 12 months of last year, there were only 3,102 crimes in this area, which is close to 10 per day. With all these areas looking so quiet, it’s hard to imagine many crimes happening.

Crime category:

Theft accounts for 45%
Traffic accidents 9%
Drug dealing 8%

5. QLD 4034

QLD 4034 covers the areas of Aspley, Boondall, Carseldine, Geebung, and Zillmere and is located directly south of Brisbane’s CBD. Over 12 months, 2,832 crimes were committed in this area.

Crime category:
Burglary 44%
Drug dealing 12%
Illegal entry 9%

Burglary is the most severe problem in this suburb, which is also one of Brisbane’s famous, wealthy coastal neighbourhoods with very high property prices. As a result, the crime rate is ranked fifth in Brisbane.

6. QLD 4109

QLD 4109 includes the areas of Altandi, Banoon, Macgregor, Robertson, Sunnybank, and Sunnybank Hills. As you can see, Brisbane’s most prominent Chinese neighbourhood made the list. In the past year, 2,639 crimes were committed here. Chinese neighbourhoods are far from being as safe as one might think.

Crime category:

The number of theft cases accounted for 37%
Illegal entry accounted for 18%
Drug dealing accounted for 11%

7. QLD 4053

QLD 4053 includes the areas of Everton Hills, Everton Park, McDowall, Mitchelton, Stafford, and Stafford Heights. It is located northwest of the CBD. There were 2,440 crimes in the past year.

Crime category:
Burglary at 33%
Drug dealing 12%
Fraud 13%

This area has always been one of Brisbane’s more chaotic zones, so it’s no surprise that it’s ranked seventh most dangerous suburb.

8. QLD 4032

QLD 4032 comprises Chermside, Chermside West, Chermside South, and Craigslea. It is located directly north of the CBD and next to QLD 4053, the most dangerous suburb in Brisbane. There have been 2,430 crimes in the past year.

Crime category:
Burglary over 50%
Drug dealing 8%
Fraud 7%

9. QLD 4102

QLD 4102 includes Buranda, Dutton Park, and Woolloongabba and is located directly south of the Brisbane CBD, just across the river. Last year, 2,153 crimes were committed in this area.

Crime category:
Burglary 27%
Drug dealing 14%
Illegal entry 11 %

After all, it’s right next to south Brisbane and the CBD, and with two of the most chaotic suburbs nearby, it makes sense that the crime rate would be high.

10. QLD 4068

4068 includes Chelmer, Indooroopilly, Long Pocket, and Taringa, and amazingly enough, it’s next to St Lucia, Brisbane’s sixth safest neighbourhood. Close neighbours, one safe and one dangerous… It’s a bit peculiar.

Last year, 1,801 crimes were committed here, and it was the only dangerous suburb with less than 2,000 crimes committed.

Crime categories:

Burglary 30%
Illegal entry 17%
Drug dealing 16%

As you can see from this list, Brisbane is very polarised regarding safety. The closer you get to the CBD, the more dangerous it is and the higher the crime rate. The lowest number of offences occurring in one year is 42, while the highest number occurring in one year is nearly 8,000 – a difference of almost 200 times.

Top 10 Safest Suburbs in Brisbane

Ranking Suburb Number of Offences
1 4111 (Nathan, Griffith University) 42
2 4037 (Eatons Hill) 132
3 4065 (Rainworth, Bardon, Bardon West) 177
4 4009 (Eagle Farm) 181
5 4073 (Seventeen Mile Rocks, Sinnamon Park) 199
6 4067 (Ironside, St Lucia, University of Qld) 221
7 4070 (Anstead, Bellbowrie, Moggill, Priors Pocket) 229
8 4061 (The Gap) 299
9 4010 (Albion, Breakfast Creek) 340
10 4112 (Kuraby) 403

1. Nathan

At the top of the list is Nathan, located at Griffith University. It’s located directly south of the Brisbane CBD. In the entire 12 months of last year, there were only 42 crimes in this area, which were relatively minor. The most serious were three assaults, all of which resulted in injuries. This is the safest suburb in Brisbane, with no bar.

2. Eatons Hill

Eatons Hill is located northwest of Brisbane CBD, which is quite a distance away. Perhaps due to its distance from the city centre and low population density, there have been 132 crimes in this area in the last 12 months. That’s an average of 11 per month. Although the gap in the first place is a bit big, with only 132 crimes in the whole year, it is also a very safe suburb.

3. QLD 4065

This area contains three neighbourhoods, Rainworth, Bardon and Bardon West, which are adjacent to the Brisbane CBD and are located directly west of the city. Over the past 12 months, 177 crimes have been committed in these three neighbourhoods. This is the third safest suburb in terms of the total number of crimes. Still, unfortunately, there are no specific crime figures for the individual areas, so if they were counted separately, the ranking would probably be higher. However, it is still one of the safest regions near the CBD.

4. Eagle Farm

Eagle Farm is Brisbane’s largest racecourse and occupies a significant portion of land within this area. As a result, the number of residents in this area is much lower than in other suburbs. Despite this, 181 crimes have been committed in the last 12 months. The crime rate would probably be higher if it weren’t for the limited number of residents.

5. QLD 4073

Brisbane

QLD 4073 is home to two of Brisbane’s most recognisable parks, Seventeen Mile Rocks and Sinnamon Park. Because the parks take up most of the land, this area has a relatively small total population yet still had 199 crimes committed.

6. St Lucia

St Lucia is close to the University of Queensland and is traditionally a wealthy neighbourhood of Brisbane, with mansions dotted along the river. It is also the sixth safest suburb in Brisbane, with 221 crimes in the last 12 months. This includes 16 assaults, several of which resulted in serious injuries.

7. Moggill

Moggill is a long way from Brisbane’s CBD and is the city’s border. It’s also a large area with a decent number of people. Although there have been 229 crimes in the last 12 months, it’s one of the safer suburbs in Brisbane.

8. The Gap

Mountains surround the Gap and have one of Brisbane’s lower population densities. In the past 12 months, 299 crimes have been committed here.

9. Albion

Albion is close to the CBD and has had 352 crimes in the last 12 months, a frequency of nearly one a day. However, its proximity to the CBD means it has a high population density and mobility, making it a safe and secure neighbourhood according to the respective ratios.

10. Kuraby

Kuraby is located southeast of the CBD, close to the Chinese district. There have been 403 crimes in the past 12 months. Given this area’s geographical location and population density, 405 crimes are not a very low frequency. That’s why it ranks last in the list of safest suburbs.

Conclusion about Safest and Most Dangerous Suburbs in Brisbane

These are the top 10 safest and 10 most dangerous suburbs in Brisbane. Brisbane’s safety is very polarised. The closer to the CBD, the more dangerous it is and the higher the crime rate. The lowest area has only 42 incidents a year, while the highest has nearly 8,000 a year, a difference of almost 200 times.
