QS Ranking 2025 Overview
QS UK University Rankings 2025
UK universities continue to shine in the QS World University Rankings 2025, with three in the world’s Top 5 and 15 in the Top 100. They also excel in the proportion of international students, ranking second globally. However, compared to the QS Ranking 2024, UK universities have slipped overall this year.
Imperial College (IC) has overtaken both Oxford and Cambridge to become the leading UK university in the QS World University Rankings. It has also surpassed Harvard and Stanford, jumping from 6th place last year to 2nd globally. Meanwhile, Cambridge has dropped from 2nd to 5th, and the University of Oxford remains unchanged at 3rd.
Among the G5 institutions, Imperial, Oxford, Cambridge, and UCL stay in the top 10, while the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) has dropped 5 places to 50th this year.
Other notable UK universities, such as the University of Edinburgh (27th), the University of Manchester (34th), and King’s College London (40th), remain in the world’s top 40. The University of Warwick is ranked 69th. The University of Bristol, the University of Southampton, and the University of Birmingham have seen slight increases in their rankings, with Birmingham rising four places to 80th despite the city’s recent financial issues.
The University of Leeds and Durham University have experienced declines in their rankings. The University of St Andrews and the University of Nottingham have fallen out of the top 100, ranking 104th and 108th respectively. The University of Sheffield also remains outside the QS top 100.
QS Australia University Rankings 2025
In the QS University Rankings 2025, nine Australian universities are in the top 100, with three in the top 20. With the exception of the University of New South Wales (which remains unchanged at 19th) and the University of Western Australia (which dropped from 72nd to 77th), all other Australian universities have improved their rankings in QS 2025.
The University of Melbourne moved up one place to 13th, and the University of Sydney also climbed one place to 18th. Australian National University rose four places to enter the world’s Top 30. Monash University advanced five places to 37th, while the University of Queensland improved three places to 40th. The University of Adelaide moved up seven places to 82nd, and the University of Technology Sydney rose two places to 88th.
QS USA University Rankings 2025
Different university ranking lists have varying selection criteria, resulting in differences in the rankings of institutions. For example, Princeton ranks higher in U.S. News, while Baruch College is often highly ranked in QuantNet. In the QS World University Rankings, MIT consistently leads among American and global universities. This year, MIT holds the No. 1 spot in the QS World University Rankings 2025 for the 13th consecutive year, making history.
Despite maintaining a good reputation among employers and academics, most U.S. universities are trending downward due to changes in ranking weights. Exceptions include Caltech, Penn, Purdue, MIT, and Harvard, which either rose or maintained their positions.
The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) has also shown remarkable improvement, jumping from the Top 15 last year to the top 10 globally, replacing the University of California, Berkeley (UCB) as this year’s standout among U.S. universities in the QS Rankings 2025. Ivy League schools like the University of Pennsylvania have made steady progress, advancing one place to 11th, while Purdue University surged from 99th to 89th.
For those that dropped in the QS rankings, UCB fell to 12th and Cornell to 16th, which are still within an acceptable range. However, the University of Chicago dropped 10 places, falling out of the Top 20. Columbia University continued to decline, moving from 23rd to 34th. UCLA experienced a significant drop of 13 places. Other universities, including UCSD, the University of Michigan, and the University of Washington, also saw declines of more than 10 places. Boston University and Georgia Institute of Technology dropped significantly, with Georgia Tech falling out of the Top 100 in the QS Rankings 2025.

QS Ranking 2024 Review
The QS World University Rankings 2024 is the 20th edition of the rankings and includes 1,500 institutions across 104 locations. It is unique among rankings in its focus on employability and sustainability. In this edition, significant enhancements have been made, introducing three new metrics: Sustainability, Employment Outcomes, and International Research Network. The rankings draw on the analysis of 17.5 million academic papers and the opinions of over 240,000 academic faculty and employers.
The United States has the most universities on the list, and MIT holds the top position for the 12th consecutive year. The University of Cambridge remains in second place and the University of Oxford climbs one position to third. A significant accomplishment is the inclusion of the University of California, Berkeley in the top 10. This achievement is attributed to its outstanding performance in the new sustainability indicator, where it ranks first globally. Notably, three Australian universities have also made substantial gains, entering the top 20.
