The University of Sheffield in Memory: A Song’s Distance

Roughly two years ago, while idly browsing through a forum, I stumbled upon a question: “Which university in the UK is best for pursuing a master’s degree in materials?  University of Edinburgh, University of Manchester, or University of Sheffield?”

I couldn’t resist responding: “Feel free to message me privately. I graduated from University of Sheffield last year with a master’s in aeronautical materials. If private messaging isn’t timely, you can also add me on WhatsApp XXX. I deeply affectionate Sheffield, so don’t hesitate to ask for help.” And thus, an incredible journey began.

Accidental Opportunity

Every couple of months or so, I get inquiries from strangers asking me: “How is The University of Sheffield? Can I learn something valuable there? Is it easy to graduate from the language course? How are the job prospects after receiving a master’s degree?” As I respond to these questions, I’m taken back to my own early days—half scared, half hopeful—starting my journey in a foreign country. It makes these strangers feel very familiar. And I find patience in answering their questions, even receiving compliments.

My friends often ask me, “Why are you so engaged with these questions about Sheffield?” I tell them because Sheffield is a wonderful place, just as I tell these inquiring friends. Maybe after finishing your master’s you might feel like you didn’t learn much, or maybe you find your UK master’s degree isn’t very useful back home. But you will absolutely feel that the time you spent living in Sheffield is a dream you will struggle to relive.

Truly, all of my acquaintances who have returned from Sheffield have nothing but good things to say about it. They continuously reminisce and say they wish to return one day, even if it’s just for a couple of days. Two months ago, during a reunion with my postgraduate classmates, everyone was talking about Sheffield, sharing each other’s embarrassing stories.

They share personal stories of cutting their fingers while cooking. Some are getting sick and too afraid to go out or tell their families, resorting to asking others for medication. And instances of sleep deprivation are frequent occurrences. They tell of instances where neighbours continually host parties and an example of a thesis supervisor disappearing after three scheduled meetings. There are even stories of being threatened and robbed by a suspicious man while taking a shortcut on the way home…

Love for Uni of Sheffield

Why do I still love Sheffield? Why do I still adore the University of Sheffield? Perhaps, it’s because of its tranquillity: spending my days quietly researching in the library, reading books in my apartment, and unwinding on the large lawn on my way home with music from my phone’s FM. Perhaps, it’s due to its purity: being physically and temporally separated from my home country, and culturally distanced from the locals, I found myself returning to my inner self, or to nature.

Could it be due to the wonderful living experience I had? During my studies there, I resided in off-campus student accommodation in Sheffield. I enjoyed a superb living environment and a harmonious community life, and thanks to the convenient facilities of the apartment, I even developed a great physical fitness regime. My lifestyle habits improved greatly!

Happy Moments

Perhaps, I love it for its liveliness: during the New Year, we would all get together to make dumplings in six steps, some just enjoyed eating, and when the rice cooker was heated, we would start eating hot pot and the joyful moments were like beautiful fireworks. In the Moulin Rouge, we would lightly sway with the music when slightly intoxicated.

Ah, upon reflection, could it be the irresistible allure of the Sheffield Christmas Market that drew me to Sheffield University? Especially when the cold winter air sweeps in, the entire city brims with festive cheer. Rows upon rows of beautifully decorated stalls, each glittering, adorned with unique trinkets, handmade crafts, and the most delicious festive food one can imagine. The intoxicating aroma of hot mulled wine mingles with the sweet scent of Christmas treats, immersing me in a magical Christmas world. The charming Christmas lights that illuminate the entire market will forever be etched in my memory, adding the warmth and radiant glow of the festive season. Amidst all this, hearty laughter and merry carols compose a symphony of Christmas joy that warms the soul.

Someone once said: a person should have two worlds, one is the practical world of eating and drinking, and the other is the unlimited poetic world. Though Sheffield is a reality, repeated recollections have made it a sanctuary for my emotions. The library at the end of the world seems like a song humming. After a short night walk, you can arrive there, it’s just a song’s distance away.
