Curriculum
Freshman
In the first semester, you will produce mini-films and exercises and participate in masterclasses and workshops on various practical aspects of filmmaking. In Semester 2, you will work collaboratively on advanced productions to understand how crew work and the different roles they can take on. On the Design and Screen Cultures programme, you’ll cover the essential histories and theories of design and screen studies. You can take up to 60 credits of elective courses within Edinburgh College of Art or across the University, subject to availability. It would be best if you discussed this with a private tutor and the relevant course organiser. This allows you to construct a programme that reflects your interests and enhances your crucial learning skills.
Sophomore
Regular projects and exercises will cover the fundamentals of film, theory, working practices and technical instruction. The school will provide practical training in using cameras (including 16mm and red fixed focal length lenses), lighting, sound and editing. Students will also collaborate on experimental films and direct their short films in term two. In addition, senior students will be assisted in producing work to develop photography, sound, editing or production skills. The externally orientated professional placement year has extensive opportunities for networking, competitions and live projects with the film industry.
