Evolution of CAT Exam

The CAT exam has evolved a lot of content over the past decade. IIM made these changes to attract a more diverse range of student bodies, particularly those who are from non-engineering backgrounds. At first, the duration of the test was 180 minutes, with 60 minutes allotted per section of the CAT exam for MBA. The total duration was reduced to 120 minutes in 2020, and the number of questions was also decreased from 100 to 76. Also, it was further reduced to 68 questions in the last year. Despite these adjustments, the CAT continues to be the most difficult MBA entrance exam in India. See the table below for a year-by-year breakdown of the exam pattern changes.

CAT Exam Preparation 2025

Preparing for the CAT 2025 exam works best with a step-by-step plan. You need to cover the whole syllabus—don’t leave anything out, as questions can appear from any topic. Taking lots of mock tests is super helpful to build your speed and accuracy. And definitely keep revising regularly so everything stays fresh in your mind.

It’s also a good idea to work on mental math—it makes calculations quicker. For Quant, make sure you’re really comfortable with the key formulas. With DILR, practice as much as you can using sectionals and old papers to get the hang of it. Picking up a few shortcuts and tricks can make a big difference on exam day.

For Reading comprehension questions, try going through passages from earlier CAT test papers—it’ll boost your comprehension. You might also find it useful to join online sessions where you can learn new techniques from others.

It is suggested that you cover the syllabus in the first three months, and then spend the next three months on practising mock tests, and finally use the last month to do the revision. Following a schedule like this can really help you stay on track and feel confident.

Just a heads-up: your CAT score is only valid for one year if you’re applying to IIMs or other top MBA colleges. Some schools, including the IIMs, let you defer your admission—meaning if you get selected, you can sometimes postpone joining by a year. But if you decide to take a year off, you’ll have to take the CAT again next time.

MBA Admission Through CAT Exam Score

To get into an IIM, candidates first need to meet a minimum CAT test percentile score, which varies for each institute. Those who clear this cutoff are shortlisted for the next stage, which usually includes a Written Ability Test (WAT), Group Discussion (GD), and a Personal Interview (PI).

The IIMs announce how they select students for their MBA programs. This process has three main steps:

First Shortlist: The IIMs create an initial list of candidates based only on their CAT exam scores. They set minimum CAT score requirements (cutoffs) for this stage.

Further Evaluation: Shortlisted candidates are then invited for the next stage. This usually includes some combination of:

  • Written Ability Test (WAT)
  • Group Discussion (GD)
  • Personal Interviews (PI)

Final Selection:
After the WAT/GD/PI stage, the IIMs calculate a Composite Score for each candidate. This final score combines the parts, including

  • The candidate’s CAT score,
  • The performances in the WAT, GD, and PI,
  • The academic records, work experiences, and other factors

Non-IIM Admission Process Through CAT

Many business schools that accept the CAT exam for admission also have a group discussion and personal interview round. However, some colleges skip this step and offer admission based on CAT scores alone.

IIM CAT Cut Offs

Each IIM sets its own CAT cutoff for admission, which also varies by candidate category. For General category applicants, the minimum required percentile usually ranges from 80 to 90, but the actual cutoff for admission is often higher. Top IIMs generally require scores between 98 and 100 percentile, while other IIMs typically have cutoffs from 90 to 97. Shortlisting for the Personal Interview (PI) round is based on these final cutoffs. The following table provides the qualifying CAT cutoff percentiles for all 21 IIMs.

FAQ

The CAT is a national-level exam for getting into MBA and other management programs in India. It’s organised by the IIMs and used by around 1,000 business schools in the country.

Actually, the CAT exam isn’t just for MBA programs. It’s also used for admission to a variety of other graduate management courses—like Executive MBAs, PhDs, and FPM programs—at the IIMs and other leading business schools in India.

You need to have a Bachelor’s degree with at least 50% marks to be eligible for the CAT exam. The minimum is 45% for candidates from reserved categories. If you’re in your final year of study, you can also apply. And there is no age limitation for the IIM entrance exam for MBA.

The salary you can expect after taking the CAT exam largely depends on which management program and business school you choose. For instance, top MBA programs at the IIMs often report average annual salaries between ₹30 to 40 lakhs.

To register for the CAT 2025 exam, there’s a non-refundable fee that you pay online. It costs INR 2,600 for General, EWS, and NC-OBC candidates, and INR 1,300 for SC, ST, and PWD candidates.

You can pursue an MBA without taking the CAT exam by applying to business schools that accept alternative test scores such as the GMAT, XAT, NMAT, MAT, SNAP, CMAT, or their own institution-specific entrance exams.

The Common Admission Test (CAT) syllabus is divided into three sections: Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (VARC), Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR), and Quantitative Aptitude (QA).

You can take the CAT exam as many times as you want, as long as you’re eligible each time you apply.

A “good CAT score” is typically defined by one’s percentile rank. Generally, anything above the 90th percentile is viewed as competitive for admission to top MBA programs in India. Those targeting the premier IIMs will usually need a percentile of 99 or higher to be in contention. Meanwhile, a score between 95 and 98 is still regarded as excellent and strengthens one’s application to other leading institutes such as XLRI and FMS.

The CAT exam doesn’t have a set passing score. Instead, it uses a percentile system to rank test-takers based on how they perform compared to others.

A candidate’s CAT score is the total marks they get by answering questions. Each correct answer adds 3 points, while each incorrect one leads to a deduction of 1 point. This means your final score of the CAT exam for MBA is based on the number of correct answers minus the penalties for wrong responses.

While for admission to IIMs and other MBA colleges in India, it’s not the raw score that matters—it’s the CAT test percentile. The percentile shows how a candidate performed compared to others who took the exam.

The Common Admission Test (CAT) is a two-hour exam consisting of three sections: Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC), Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR), and Quantitative Ability (QA). Each section must be completed within 40 minutes for most test-takers, while candidates with disabilities are allowed approximately 53 minutes per section.

The CAT exam is held in about 170 Indian cities. Applicants can select up to six preferred cities when applying. Please choose carefully, as changing your test city later is difficult and subject to seat availability.

The shortlist for the top IIMs is announced in the first week of January, shortly after the CAT results are declared. After that, each IIM releases its own shortlist one after the other throughout the same month. By the end of January, all 21 IIMs have published their MBA/PGP shortlists.

Yes, you are eligible. You must have a bachelor’s degree in any subject from a UGC-recognized university. You also need at least 50% marks if you’re in the General category, or 45% if you’re from SC/ST categories.
