Durham Student Accommodation Rental Guide

As a new student, Durham has many housing resources to consider. The main options for international students are renting their rooms, student residences and student flats, so I’m going to provide a reference guide to renting a room for students who are going to study in Durham mainly from these three aspects.

Renting a room in Durham
The proportion of international students renting their rooms is still very high, after all, the price is relatively affordable and flexible, here we recommend a student rental property agency website:

uhomes.com
The audience of uhomes.com is mainly students, so the main feature of the listings is that they cover the school districts in the UK and use each school as a starting point to look for student accommodation around. The characteristics of these accommodations also basically meet the needs of students, such as proximity to the school, good security around the area, and good infrastructure. Students can leave a simple message on the website asking for housing information and get a reply very quickly, which is very convenient for renting a room in a different location.

School Accommodation in Durham
With the demand for on-campus student accommodation outstripping the supply, student flats have been created. These flats, which are run by specialised companies and have excellent property management, are also very popular among international students.

Compared to London, there are fewer properties available in Durham. I looked up around ten major UK flat companies and found that Unite and CRM offer flats in Durham. Below is the basic information about the flat status of the two companies.

1. Unite
Flat: Elvet Studios

Address: Green Lane, DH1 3UA

Unite is the largest student accommodation company in the UK, so you can trust its services and facilities. elvet Studios is about 15 minutes walk from Durham University. There are other recreational facilities around the area, such as Freemans Quay Leisure Centre, which is a 15-minute walk away, where you can swim, work out, or join the cricket club in Studios Square. There are also many cafes and restaurants around the area, perfect for a happy hour with friends or to fill your stomach. Durham train station is about 25 minutes walk away, and the city centre is about 15 minutes walk away. Tesco, Iceland, Marks and Spencer’s all have shops in the city.

Dormitory type: Single bed, room size about 18 sq ft.

Toilet, Bathroom: Separate

Kitchen: communal

Accommodation fees: from £175 per week (51 weeks)

All utilities included

2. CRM
Flat: St Margaret’s Flats

Address: St Margarets Garth, DH1 4DH

CRM is also a large UK student accommodation company that operates flats in Durham that are about 10 minute’s walk from Durham University. Because the surrounding amenities are similar to ELVET STUDIOS, it’s a relatively easy walk to the city and the train station, and there are plenty of restaurants and cafes to choose from, so I won’t expand on that here.

Dormitory type: single bed

Toilet, bathroom: Because it is a five-room flat, these facilities are public.

Kitchen: communal

Accommodation fee: £150/week (50 weeks rental)

Water, electricity and internet fees are all-inclusive

School Accommodation in Durham
Among the many accommodation options, the most sought-after are school halls of residence, mainly because they are convenient and comfortable, and their supply is far less than its demand. Durham University’s halls of residence are operated by the university’s fourteen colleges, and the halls of residence offered by the different colleges are broadly similar, though there will be some slight differences. Students choose the college they are interested in according to the characteristics of the different colleges and then select the appropriate dormitory. The rent of the dormitory is the same for different colleges, here are the prices for reference.

For Self-catered, i.e. students who do not include meals:

Standard Room: £5,490/academic year

En-suite Room: £6,205/study year

For Part-catered students, i.e. not including meals:

Standard Room: £7,680/academic year

En-suite Room: £8,444 per year.

Because of the limited space of the article, here are some examples of the dormitory status of three colleges, and you have to check the rest by yourself.

1. Collingwood College
Collingwood College has 34 dormitories, all of which are standard rooms, with meals provided on weekdays, but not on weekdays. There is a Common Centre Room in the common area of the dormitory, where you can cook together in the communal kitchen, watch TV or do activities together. There is also a gym, a music room, a computer room, a coffee shop, a cinema and a games room.

Lease: 50 weeks (40 weeks is possible under special circumstances)

2. Grey College
There are 57 dormitories, most of them are standard rooms, and about 8 of them are single-gender rooms. there are two choices of meals, one is meal time on weekdays, and the other is no meals. There is also a Common Centre Room in the common area of the dormitory, where you can cook together in the communal kitchen, watch TV or do activities together. There is also a gym, a karaoke room, a coffee shop and other recreational facilities.

Lease: 50 weeks (40 weeks is possible under special circumstances)

3. Hatfield College
Hatfield College has 44 dormitories, most of them are standard rooms, and about 8 of them are ensuite rooms, and there are two choices of meals, one is provided on weekdays, and the other is not. The facilities are also very good, including a kitchen, gym, karaoke room, coffee shop and other recreational facilities.

Above is the introduction of Durham’s accommodation situation, you can according to the tendency to take care of the house before you start your busy study~!
