From time to time, you will be asked to show proof of identity or address when making registrations and applications in the UK. For example, when buying alcohol, cigarettes and going to nightclubs, you must show ID to prove you are over 18 years old. So, what documents can be used as proof?
As we all know, a passport and BRP are definitely proof of identity that meets the requirements, but it’s troublesome to replace your passport if you lose it in the UK, and foreign ID cards are not recognised in the UK. And like address proof, such also needs to be provided in the bank account and other circumstances. These documents are indispensable in the application process; the process will be delayed without them.
This blog lists some documents that international students can use to prove their identity and address in the UK as a reference.
Proof of Identity (POI)
- Passport
- UK Visa Card BRP
- Temporary or full UK driving licence
Please note that a student card with a photo is not acceptable as proof of identity, and if it is accepted, it is an offence. You can go to the official website of the UK government to check the list of documents that can be used as proof of identity given on the official website.
Proof of Address (POA)
- Bank statement (must be with name and address)
- Temporary or full UK driving licence
- Water, electricity, gas or monthly mobile phone bill within three months
- Council Tax or a bill issued by the Inland Revenue
- TV Licence for the same year
- Letter from university
- Housing contract
Reminder
As proof of address will be required at some point in the UK, it is recommended that you keep at least three months‘ worth of letters that can be used as proof of address.
