After living here for more than half a year, I have finally made peace with this student apartment.
At first, I found it small. A bed, a desk, a mini kitchen, you had to be careful not to bump into the corners when turning around. But later, I realized that this "though the sparrow is small" actually brings a sense of security— the heating is always warm enough, the water pressure is always sufficient, and all the electricity, water, and internet fees are included in the rent. In winter, I no longer have to wrap myself in a blanket like I did in the old off-campus house, calculating the electricity bill.
The window faces an inner garden. Although it’s just a small patch of greenery, catching a glimpse of that green during the dreary rainy days in the UK always brightens my mood a little. The soundproofing is better than I expected. When the bass from the neighbor's party comes through, it dulls into a vague background noise, perfectly covering up my sighs while writing papers.
The most delightful part is the common area. The first floor has a study room, a pool table, and a free coffee machine. During finals week, I go down at two in the morning to get hot water, often bumping into a few other international students with the same dark circles under their eyes, and we nod at each other like comrades in the trenches. The laundry room is on the lower ground floor. The dryer rumbles loudly as it spins, and the anxiety of deadlines seems to be spun dry along with the clothes.

However, that is the only benefit of this apartment. The front desk service is poor, very impolite, and inefficient. Things that need to be repaired are reported for half a month without any action, while things that don't need to be fixed get worked on unnecessarily; if they start, it takes a month to finish. They constantly knock on the door, which really disrupts my rest time. At least the maintenance workers do not enter the room without permission, but those two front desk ladies are different; they often come into our room with the keys without permission, which has left me feeling uneasy.
It's so noisy that I can't sleep at night. The elevator has been under repair for a month and still isn't fixed. The apartment staff randomly enters the room, which is disgusting.
