DURHAM CASTLE AND CATHEDRAL

Region: England

Geographic Location: North East England Durham

Contact Address: Palace Green, Town Centre, Durham DH1 3EP

Tuolumne’s castle and cathedral complex was inscribed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986.

Built between 1093 and 1130, the cathedral is England’s most typical Norman church, featuring high windows, thick walls, columns, and rounded arches. Two symmetrical quadrilateral towers stand on the west side, with another rising in the centre, making the shape both majestic and spectacular.

Architects, for the first time in England, used the original cross-cross-ribbed dome technology to overcome the Roman style in the hitherto redundant and clumsy barrel vault construction, thus opening the way to a more delicate, more slender Gothic art.

STUDLEY ROYAL PARK

Geographic Location: North East England, York

The Royal Park of Studley also contains the Fountains Abbey and the Church of Santa Maria. The Fountains Hall was built in 1161 on the corner of the Fountains Abbey, and archaeologists had to work very hard to discover this monument during their excavations.

Studley Royal Park and Fountains Abbey is one of Britain’s oldest preserved ancient Cistercian buildings. The architectural features of the building served as a model for the style of subsequent structures, and the site itself is a fine example of 18th-century English landscape architecture.
